2023 Waste Management Open Picks & Day One Bets

Anonymous Writer

The Waste Management Open is considered one of the best golf tournaments of the golf season. People love the Stadium Course because it is basically a legal party on one of the prettiest golf courses in America. This is a special weekend for sports because the Waste Management Open is consistently in Scottsdale, Arizona. If you have not heard, the Super Bowl is in Glendale, Arizona this Sunday evening. This upcoming Sunday is one of the best days of the year because we always have an exciting ending to the WMO and it carries over to the kick-off of the greatest championship in the world. A lot of money will be bet this weekend, so why not start on a Thursday?

WMO Champion Picks:

Justin Thomas +2500: This man is one hell of a golfer. He is one of the best players in the world and can win any weekend of the year. For this price, how can you not sprinkle some on him? Not to mention, he has always been good to us when it comes down to betting on golf. The defending PGA Champion has also had a great resume at TPC Scottsdale over the years, finishing Tied 3rd, 3rd, Tied 13th, and Tied 8th in his last four outings. It just seems like he is due for a big win this weekend.

Scottie Scheffler +1200: Yes, I understand how hard it is to defend a tournament you won last year, but Scottie Scheffler is on a different tier of golfers. He is the defending golfer of the year for a reason. Scheffler's swing is smooth as butter. When he is on, he is on. He does not lose sight of the end goal. Not to mention, he can go shoot a 65 at any time and do it again. I believe he has a shot this weekend and expect him to be in contention. It is worth sprinkling a couple of bucks on him.

TOP 20:

Xander Schauffele -140: A strong golfer who has played really well this far through the young season, expect Schauffele to have a good tournament. Many people are picking him to win, but I think gets outplayed on Sundays... but that does not mean he can not finish in the Top 20. After withdrawing from the Tournament of Champions with back issues, Schauffele has finished tied for 3rd at The American Express. Then at the Farmer's Insurance Open, he finished tied for 13th.

Justin Thomas +115: How can you not hammer this? The talented golfer could win this thing. He can certainly be in contention, and if he is not the first two days, we have seen JT go shoot at 63 on a Saturday or Sunday to sneak into contention. Like I said earlier, his last four starts at TPC Scottsdale include a T3, 3rd, T18th, and T8th. At plus money, I am sold, Vegas.

Sungjae Im +110: Talk about a hot golfer right now. Another name that could be in contention this weekend. Im has finished T4, T18, Cut, T13, and T8 in his last five golf tournaments. He has been swinging it well lately on the west coast.

Hideki Matsuyama +140: This pick was just a good odds pick to be honest. Matsuyama can show up any week, but he can also finish 34th. I like this pick because he seems to always play well at the Waste Management Open. Here are his last couple of outings T9, T48, and T21. I have a positive feeling about his wedges and putter being hot this weekend.

Brendan Steele +360: My dark horse this week. People do not know much about Brendan Steele. He is a solid player who seems to be around on the weekends. He just can not ever pull off the big wins. Allow me to enlighten you on this player. He has finished 5th, 6th, 6th, 16th, and 3rd at TPC Scottsdale. For this season, he has finished T20, T32, T48, WD, and T18. I like the price on this pick because he seems to like this golf course.

Top 40

Brendan Steele +140: Like I just said, he has had an okay season so far, but a great track record at TPC Scottsdale. He is somehow plus money to finish inside the Top 40. Sign me up, and let me put some money on the guy because I do not know if anyone is.

Rickie Fowler -120: A once winner at the Waste Management Open, Rickie Fowler is looking to get back into the swing of things after a rough couple of years. You could bet him Top 20 but I think it is risky, and think Top 40 is just safer. He has won this course and knows how to get around it. I feel good about his swing and mentality after a rough couple of years. He has had a great season, finishing T11, T34, and T2 in his last couple of tournaments.

Keith Mitchell -110: For a cheap play, I love this. Keith Mitchell has been playing really good golf recently. He seems comfortable where he is and with who he has been around. After a Top 5 performance at Pebble Beach, he has finished T22, Cut, and T39. He has been playing well recently, expect him to make the cut and fight on the weekends. He is the type of guy to have some fun on hole 16 when he is not in contention.

Kevin Kisner +250: This is an insane price for a guy who seems to take 32nd every single tournament. It is worth the play. He can make the cut and have a solid weekend. He has finished T32, 19th, and T32 in his last three outings.

3-Ball:

I only have one pick for this three-ball and it is Billy Horschel +150 to shoot better than Jason Day and Michael Thompson. Jason Day is hit or miss and has been so-so as of late. Michael Thompson has either taken in the 30th's or has missed cuts. I am hoping Billy boy has some fun today.

2-Ball:

Yes, head-to-head matchups. Let's get into it.

Keith Mitchell +100 vs Taylor Montgomery

I am a big fan of Keith Mitchell. He wears some cool gear. I think he beats the rookie today. Hard to bet against how well Keith Mitchell has been playing.

Xander Schauffele -135 vs Tony Finau

Again, hard to bet against Xander with how he has been swinging it. I understand Tony Finau lives in the Phoenix area, but have you looked at his track record? He has been cut in 5 of his last 7 starts. Hard to bet against that stat, give me Xander.

Matthew Fitzpatrick vs Patrick Cantlay -130

I think Matthew Fitzpatrick is an overrated golfer. He had one good tournament at the US Open. Other than that, he is just another golfer. He missed the cut last week at Pebble Beach. The kid wears braces and is 28, no way I am betting for this dude! In all seriousness, Patrick Cantlay is the better golfer, and I like this play.

Tom Hoge vs Chris Kirk +105

Guys, go look at Chris Kirk's last couple of tournaments. Never mind, I got you: T3, 3, Cut, T52. Tom Hoge's last couple of tournaments: T48, T32, T41, T3. As of late, Kirk has been pretty solid, while Hoge has been hanging around. The only thing that scares me is that Hoge has been more consistent, as he has made every cut. I'll put some on this plus odd play.

Brendon Todd +115 vs Shane Lowry

This is a good matchup, because Shane Lowry had a great season last year, and Brendon Todd is like Brenden Steele, above average golfer that can not get it done. Lowry's last couple of tournaments: Cut, T28, 18, T23, T23. Todd's last couple of tournaments: T2, Cut, and T21. Maybe Lowry is due for a crappy tournament.
